Minnesota State University- Moorhead

Master Plan Scope
The master plan for MSU Moorhead proposes new residence hall construction, renovation and demolition of existing halls, as well as revisions to the existing campus site plan. Each phase responds to current campus housing market demands by introducing housing types that provide a variety of living options, more space, and greater privacy. The integration of academic spaces into the residential buildings also provides an alternate learning environment from the typical classroom building, meeting the housing department’s programmatic mission to establish vibrant living-learning communities.

Objectives
The housing master plan proposed for Minnesota State University Moorhead has three objectives:

  • Address the backlog of deferred maintenance in campus housing facilities.
  • Provide spaces that support the programmatic mission of the housing department.
  • Create housing options that will appeal to students over the local market.

Our plan, in collaboration with Alexander & Associates, comprehensively meets these goals, providing design solutions that will reinvigorate the Moorhead residential community.

Pedestrian Path
Supporting and strengthening academic and residential connections on the MSUM campus begin with examining the existing site plan and analyzing how it relates to the critical objectives established by the housing master plan. Creating safe, walkable pedestrian paths is integral to any successful campus and the master plan site analysis addresses this issue from the onset. Our plan proposes to strengthen an existing central pedestrian path by providing gathering nodes for students in key locations. Seating, planters, lighting, and changes in paving will identify these areas as outdoor gathering spaces.
