Westside Crafted Ranch


This project originated due to the needs for addressing water drainage problems in the front yard, along with designing a new path to lead to the front entry and providing a new fresh identity to a mid-century ranch in Ann Arbor. A new curved stone wall forms a landscaped base around the existing trees, using sandstone from a former wall in ruins on the site. A garage addition with a linear drain diverts water away from the home. A curved stone path follows the contours of the site to the new entry, allowing space for hydrangea and native plants. A new entry pergola is created by using “L” shaped cedar posts on stainless feet. The verticals provide privacy and screening from the road while horizontal beams define the front entry. The pergola curves gracefully on a base of split faced granite, which is geometric and crafted, in contrast to the rough stone of the natural landscaping below
