Windy Crest

The most striking features of this home are the modern angularity of the buildings massing and the commanding views of the site. Perched on the top of a hill overlooking a natural setting, the House on Windy Crest required a dramatic overhaul to maintain the home’s contemporary architecture while banishing the 70s’ feel. In the original design, rooms were discrete rather than open to one another, interior finishes were outdated, and circulation was awkward. The challenge was to retain the integrity of the home’s original concept while rearranging and adding spaces, removing walls, updating finishes, and opening views to the outside. Goals included maximizing natural light, simplifying the circulation, and providing both dramatic spaces for entertaining and intimate spaces for daily living. Above the garage, an exercise room with a butterfly roof replaced a flat exterior roof deck – creating space for large floor-to-ceiling windows with landscape views. The exterior of the home is clad in whitewashed cedar tongue and groove planks installed vertically. The windows include large sheets of fixed glass and operable awnings for ventilation and cross circulation. The landscaping includes a necklace of plants, decks, walkways, and a water feature that transitioned the refined contemporary architecture to the natural landscape.
